Gen Z and new rules of online dating

HarleyBy HarleyDecember 20, 2025

Millennials remember a world before social networks, while Gen Z was born in the digital age. This is the first generation for whom online dating has always been the norm. Gen Z doesn’t perceive the internet as an addition to reality but as an organic extension. Therefore, for them, meeting people online is as natural as it is for Millennials to meet at work or in public places.

However, Gen Z has its requirements for online communication. Formal profiles are not their style. They value flexibility and ease; therefore, it is important for them that communication does not turn into an obligation. Zoomers will not conform to someone else’s demands and rules. Therefore, the world has no choice but to adapt to the expectations of Generation Z.

New formats: group dating and joint dates

For millennials, the standard format is strictly one-on-one dating. However, Gen Z is experimenting with new scenarios and increasingly opting for group dating. This format has several advantages that are important for zoomers, as seen below.

  • Support: In the company of friends, many people feel more confident, and Generation Z is no exception. The support of a close friend helps people open up more quickly and show their true selves. Additionally, you can always “pass the mic” to a friend if something goes wrong, or simply laugh together in an awkward situation.
  • Safety: The group dating format allows one to feel more comfortable and secure. For Gen Z, who are particularly sensitive to violations of personal boundaries, the feeling of safety is one of the main arguments in favour of “group dates.”
  • Increased social dynamics: In a group, it’s easier to start a conversation: you can discuss your favourite TV show, share a meme, or simply tell a funny story. Also, in a company, the quality of communication does not depend on just two people; because of this, the fear of doing something wrong is reduced.

Developers haven’t ignored the needs of Zoomers and are starting to implement “group mode” on their platforms. Services are emerging where users can go on online double dates or chat as a group with another group of strangers. This perfectly aligns with the philosophy of Gen Z, such as less pressure, more freedom, etc.

Dating in video chats

Another trend that Gen Z loves is real-time video dating. This format perfectly fits their fast-paced lifestyle, where communication happens quickly and without unnecessary “bureaucracy.” All it takes is to click the “Start” button, and within a few seconds, a chat partner appears on the screen. If the conversation goes off track, you can simply press “Next,” and the system will connect you with another user.

However, millennials are acquainted with videochats. The first of such platforms emerged in the 2000s when the internet became accessible to almost everyone. The story of chat roulettes began with the service Omegle. The idea of the developer, an American student, was remarkably simple. The idea was to randomly connect two strangers. Initially, users could only text chat, but as time went on, the option for video communication was introduced. After this innovation, the audience of Omegle grew exponentially.

Millions of people around the world log into chatroulette daily to have a good time and have a new experience. The format attracted users with its unpredictability, where you could never predict who would be on the other side of the screen. For millennials, the ability to communicate with strangers in real-time was something completely new. On the other hand, for Gen Z, camchats became a logical extension of the digital socialisation they were accustomed to.

Omegle has not been operational for several years, but many other random video chats have emerged. This format remains popular among zoomers, and here’s why:

  • More personal contact: When communicating via video, you can see and hear the person almost as if you were in real life. Non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions, intonation, eye contact, and gestures, are very important for Zoomers.
  • A safer format than an in-person meeting: If at any point during the conversation you feel uncomfortable, you can end it without having to explain your reasons.
  • Time-saving: In a few minutes, you can determine if there’s any common ground with your chat partner and whether you want to know them better or not. There’s no need to waste time on lengthy, unproductive texting or meetings.

However, like any other format, online videochats have their disadvantages. A weak point for many platforms is moderation. Sometimes, fakes, bots, or people who behave inappropriately may be encountered. However, persistent or rude chat partners can always be blocked.

There is also the risk of data leakage. Some users are concerned that their videos or screenshots could end up online. For Generation Z, which is sensitive to privacy issues, this is a significant concern. However, these problems can be avoided by choosing reputable services. They should have clear security policies and effective moderation in place.

The following online video chat roulettes are popular among Zoomers:

  • Flirtbees: A classic chat for comfortable communication with ladies from all over the world.
  • CooMeet.chat: This Flirtbees alternative is designed for romantic dating. Its main advantage is mandatory user verification. Every lady verifies her information; therefore, you can be confident that on the other side of the screen is a real chat partner.
  • Camgo: Another Flirtbees alternative with a gender filter. You can communicate with men and women, couples, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Camloo: You can chat in a messenger, add your favourite users to your friends list, and send them virtual gifts.
  • Shagle: This chat is similar to Flirtbees but it features flexible settings for finding chat partners. There are filters for gender, age, region, interests, and other parameters.

It is essential to always remember the basic safety rules. The most important thing is not to rush into sharing personal information. If your chat partner seems pushy or behaves inappropriately, it is best to end the conversation immediately. Also, this can be done with just one click.

What will online dating be in the future?

Online services are set to become more interesting and diverse. Today, developers are integrating AR and VR formats, providing the opportunity to meet in virtual space. Therefore, It is likely that in the future, we could enjoy spending time without ever leaving home. However, for Gen Z, it’s not just about algorithms and technology, but rather the feeling of real closeness with each other. Thus, personal contact will remain a top priority.
